
The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle (LADCC) announced nominations and special awards for excellence in Los Angeles and Orange County theatre’s 2012 calendar year on Jan. 24. Topping the list with five nominations each wereJitney (South Coast Repertory),Silence! The Musical (Theater Mogul/Oskar Eiriksson and MagicSpace Entertainment) and Waiting for Godot (Center Theatre Group).
The 44th annual LADCC Awards ceremony will take place March 18 at 7:30 PM at the Los Angeles Theatre Center at 514 S. Spring Street in downtown L.A. French Stewart, best known for his work on NBC’s “3rd Rock From the Sun,” will host.
In recognition of this year’s theme, “Theatre Everywhere,” representatives of theatre companies based within the geographic beat covered by members of the Circle will join Stewart and Circle members to present awards in 17 competitive categories. Read more……

Stage and screen veterans Barrett Foa and Matthew Morrison visited the Los Angeles production ofSilence! The Musical at the Hayworth Theatre on Friday, October 12. Following the performance, the pair visited the actors backstage.
Davis Gaines and Christine Lakin lead the Los Angeles company of the musical, an unauthorized parody of the film The Silence of the Lambs, with a score by Jon and Al Kaplan and a book by Hunter Bell.Christopher Gattelli serves as director/choreographer.
The cast also includes Stephen Bienskie, Kathy Deitch, Jeff Hiller, John Kassir, Jesse Merlin, Jeff Skowron, and Karl Warden. See more…..

Turning a popular movie into a stage musical is nothing new, but “Silence! The Musical” certainly wins points for creative license. The show, currently an Off-Broadway hit in New York, takes on Jonathan Demme’s 1991 Oscar-winning thriller “The Silence of the Lambs” and delivers a hilarious, irreverent musical featuring singing, dancing lambs, and songs like “Are You About a Size 14?” Now, L.A. audiences will have a chance to get in on the laughs when “Silence!” begins performances at theHayworth Theatre on Aug. 31. Veteran actor Davis Gaines, best known for performing the title character in The Phantom Of The Opera more than 2,000 times, is taking on a very different kind of project with Silence! The Musical, but not necessarily a very different type of role. “My parents, who are really supportive, come to most everything I do,” says Gaines. “I had to tell them they were not allowed to come to this one. I just couldn’t sing that in front of my mom onstage.” Gaines is talking about his first number in the upcoming show, Silence! The Musical. The play is a parody of the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. Gaines is Hannibal Lector, and while the first song he sings doesn’t come until four numbers in, it begins a deluge of irreverent musical comedy that becomes the show’s signature motif. See more….

Jon and Al Kaplan, a couple of 30-something Jewish brothers from Staten Island, have long been so enamored of the grisly film that they thought it would be a hoot to make a cheerfully twisted musical based on it. That effort turned out to become an exuberantly tasteless off-Broadway hit, “Silence! The Musical,” which will have its West Coast premiere Sept. 8 at The Hayworth Theatre. See more…
